I'm trying to make a beacon/lighthouse which is visible from a distance at night (on far render). What is the best light source which will provide the brightest light / most visible to the human eye when wandering back home at night?
Edit: Alternatively, are there any working mods/plugins that produce better lighting alternatives?
I've seen some good answers on this question so far, but there is a way to to light the underside of the platform without making holes that go all the way through by using artificial means like lava.
If the platform is at least 3 blocks high, you can hollow out the middle layer and fill it with lava, with a pattern of glass below like so:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX X = Stone (or whatever)
XLLLLLLLLLLLLLX L = Lava
X^XXX^XXX^XXX^X ^ = Glass
Perhaps you could pattern the glass on the bottom layer to resemble flourescent lighting. If your building material is flammable, you can replace the lava with lightstone or torches.
Light will shine through paintings, but paintings have to be placed over solid blocks (which signs count as!), so you could make a wall like so:

The hole in the middle would actually be 2 deep; you'd place a torch in the back, then a sign in front, then put a painting over the hole/sign; the torch would shine through the sign and painting, and light up the room (although the light would be somewhat diminished because the torch is recessed by 2 blocks).

Lava, while potentially more dangerous, might be a better option as it more easily occupies a larger volume. It will be easier to see several bright blocks rather than just one or two.
You could build a glass box on top of a tower and fill it with lava. This should be visible from afar and relatively safe.
