Minecraft – if making a .ogg file, do you make it a .ogg file or put it in a file

when i was making my resource pack (not avalible to download), i was making the cat music disc make it sound like me. so i ask the question. do i make a file named cat and put cat.ogg in it or so i put the .ogg file in the sounds folder alone? if it should be named something else please tell me

If you're unsure where to put resource pack files, you can get a complete default Minecraft texture pack by going to %appdata%\.minecraft\versions\<latest-version> and opening the .jar file with an archiver (e.g. 7zip, WinRAR etc.). In there, there's an assets folder that contains all the built in Minecraft textures and sounds.

Find whichever sound file represents Cat, and make sure to put yours in the exact same place

Yes, you are able to play custom sounds with Command Blocks using command:

playsound <sound> <player> [x] [y] [z] [Volume] [Pitch] [minimumVolume]

Minecraft Wiki has the following description:

Example: Sound located at .minecraft\assets\sound\mob\pig\death.ogg The value for sound would be written as mob.pig.death, as the command originates from the sound folder. For sequentially numbered files pertaining to the same event (like various walking sounds), the player must exclude the number of the sound (for example, sound located at .minecraft\assets\sound\mob\pig\say2.ogg). In this case, the command will play a randomly selected sound out of the three available. A player or area must be selected, and the player must be able to hear the sound from where it is played.

I have no knowledge on adding more numbered sounds, but the wording of the above description makes me think it should be handled OK by the game. Unless anyone else adds that information, you'll have to test yourself - just add a loud scream to zombie groans and walk around for some time :)

You have to override all of the different music files of minecraft, which are
music/game/calm1-3, music/game/hal1-4, music/game/nuance1-2 and music/game/piano1-3

Otherwise the non-overridden songs will still play.

Minecraft will play one of these songs every 5 minutes, which means that two songs can never overlap, however, if you are using /playsound for this, then minecraft will also play those songs at random intervals, causing two songs to overlap
