As you can see from the above picture, my map doesn't have a house icon, to show where the woodland mansion is. What does this mean? I haven't been able to find anything online about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are not too many that work with 1.8, but I will list a few that seem to work for your problem:
MCAMap is a tool that I have used before. All you need to do is point it to the world folder and render all the region files. Make sure not to make the quality too good, or it will take some time to render. Officially, it supports only 14w11b, though I don't see why the 1.8 release version wouldn't work.
uNmINeD seems like a very nice mapping software, 1.8 is officially supported. I haven't actually used it though, so I can only vouch for it based on nice screenshots. No idea as to the speed as well.
Minutor Reasonably quick and straightforward. 1.8 supported. You have to open the world folder rather than a
level.dat
The 16x16x6 area is centered around the center of the village. The center of the village is geometric mean of coordinates of all doors that are part of the village. The door coordinates are usually carried by the bottom part of the door.
If all doors are at the same Y coordinate, the area would be centered vertically around the bottom edge of the doors (so neither A nor B in the picture is correct).

Found a fix. This happened to me as well. All you need to do is place your map in a crafting table and surround all other 8 slots with regular paper. This increases the size of your map by increasing the scale (i.e: "1:2" now becomes "1:4", then "1:8", and so forth). Keep doing so until you see a house icon.
