Herobrine was a fictional character that was said to 'haunt' Minecraft. People would fake screenshots saying he followed them into caves or whatever. He was said to be Notch's dead brother (who doesn't exist).
With the mod that allows you to bring fake NPCs into the game, it became more common to put fake Herobrines into the game.
He does not exist and is a joke. This was Notch's response - trolling.

According to the forum thread (as of the time of posting this answer), ZanMinimap 0.9.9 (the most current version) is only Beta 1.6.4 ready.
The current version of ZanMinimap, 0.10.0, is Beta 1.6.6 compatible.

Using it on grass with enough space will cause long grass and flowers to appear.
You can also use the bone meal on the underside of the block and long grass will still grow.
