Minecraft – Where does a Minecraft Server keep a list of online players

I realize that when running a server, you can type /list to get a list of online players. But where does that list come from? Is there a way to access it externally? or is it stored in the .jar file itself?

The list of online players is in the working memory of the Java process that runs the server. There is no way to access it externally, unless you are using a mod.

Time in the sense of day/night cycle and weather passes while no one is on, however in all other senses time doesn't pass in a given chunk unless a player is online and nearby enough (although for a small set of chunks near the default spawn, "nearby enough" is anywhere in the Overworld).

If you are on MacOSX or Linux, I think this command does pretty much what you want:

unzip -p server.jar version.json | grep "name"

In my case it responds with "name": "1.14.4",

If you are on Windows I assume you could do something similar with PowerShell
