This doesn't include collecting the base materials, or smelting, just the actual crafting process itself. For example, a cake requires two steps, as you have to craft three buckets for the milk, then combine with the wheat/eggs/sugar. A minecart with hopper requires 4 steps, as you have to craft the chest, the hopper, the minecart, then the minecart with hopper.

Is this the most complex crafting recipe, in terms of number of steps needed to craft? Or is there a recipe which needs 5 steps, or more?

As of 1.8.9 I strongly believe that the minecart with hopper is the longest recipe. Unless you count banners. There are banners with all kinds of designs and depending on the design will depend on the steps. Although for this you are adding on to the same item to create a better or worse one.

The book and quill takes 3 steps -The enchanting table takes 3 steps

but no other 4 step items

If you build tree farms underground plain trees are the best. If you keep the ceiling 7 blocks high the whole tree will be harvestable from the ground. Plain trees can grow when planted right next to each other unlike birch trees. Pine trees will not grow with a 7 block high ceiling.

However, if you plant plain trees too close together they won't grow much leaves. So it is easy to run out of saplings. I suggest planting them in rows and leave a block or two between the rows.

The most resource efficient way I can come up with to power a horizontal line of droppers is this

with the redstone line on the left being connected to a clock. This works because the repeaters strongly power the dropper they are pointing into causing the droppers to the left and right to be indirectly powered.

The vertical line of droppers is powered as described in this Youtube video, with a comparator being used to send a (inverted by a redstone torch) signal to a vertical stack of redstone torches powering repeaters pointing into every 2nd vertical dropper.

With regards to the specific situation you are in the most resource efficient way to get the mobs from the exit of the spawner to the 'home' area would be to bring them up high enough using a mob elevator (a 1x1 tube filled with alternating water blocks and signs will cause the mobs to swim themselves up to the top) to a point where they can be dropped down the required number of blocks.

The only pitfall with this type of system is ensuring that the mobs fall a consistent distance everytime. All that is required to do this is to ensure that the water stream at the top of the elevator is set up like this

(where ~ = water and S is a sign)

So that mobs get pushed into the drop shaft by other mobs pushing against them instead of directly by a water stream.
