Why are there mob spawners in Minecraft if mobs (hostile/friendly/neutral) can spawn without them? if the mobs can spawn without the spawner than what is the point of them?

Most mob farming techniques use a stream of water which collect all the monsters in the room to a central point, and then drowns them by pulling them underwater. Some other ways to kill them are:
- Pushing them via a water current into cacti
- Using lava to kill them
- Making them fall really far so they die from the impact
Just as a note, most people just build enormous completely dark rooms (like this one) to farm mobs rather than using the actual mob spawner blocks.

You can craft mob spawners with ingredient, you just have to download Mod Loader and put some class in the .minecraft/mods folder. You should find instructions on his page. And yes it's for single player

Mob spawners are used to designate "dungeon" areas. While hostile mobs can certainly spawn without spawners, the spawners guarantee the appearance of certain mobs in certain areas. For example, the cave spider nest is a great example. Normally, cave spiders can't spawn randomly, but cave spider spawners "force" those spawns in the abandoned mines where they live.
