Minecraft – Why did I take damage from landing the boat on a slab

I wanted to create a "harbor" for my boats, and I read that slabs will not damage the boat if I sail onto it. But when I tested it out, I instantly died the minute the boat touched the slab. How do I fix it?

From the Minecraft Wiki page on Boats:

Running aground on slabs will inflict some amount of falling damage. The damage seems to be much worse the longer you've been in the boat. (Perhaps due to the bobbing motion at sea being counted as 'falling' distance, and cashing it all in at once). This bug is also triggered when exiting a boat while on Soul Sand.

So yes, this glitch may kill you, and unfortunately using other blocks like Soul Sand doesn't help the matter. All you can do is hope it gets fixed.

What you should do is make the water only one block deep, so that it all levels out. See the question that ZoogieZork posted. After that, you can dig as deep as you want and the currents shouldn't appear.

In general, here is a good technique for building rivers (top-down view):

First, you want to dig out a path for your river. Place alternating blocks and water sources along where your river is dug out so it looks like a checkerboard. Then, destroy all the blocks. Because there are water sources every other block, the space created by the blocks being destroyed will turn into source blocks themselves and create a nice and smooth river.

In your case, you would probably be able to build this pattern right up to one block before the lake. When you've destroyed all the blocks and the river is nice and smooth, you should be able to connect the lake and the river and the connection between them should level out.

If I understand your question correctly, you'll probably want to reset the game. Warning: If instructions aren't followed correctly, all worlds will be deleted. I am not responsible if this happens.

For Windows 7, press start (on Windows XP click "run..." afterwards and then type in %appdata% in the run dialog, not the search), type in %appdata% in the search bar, and press enter. A folder should pop up.
Navigate your way to .minecraft/saves/. Copy everything in that folder to another location. Your desktop, for instance.
Now, go back up the folders and delete the .minecraft folder. Empty your recycle bin.
Open up the Minecraft Launcher and log in. If you followed directions correctly, it should automatically update.
Now, close Minecraft and copy the stuff you copied to your desktop back into .minecraft/saves/
Open Minecraft. Enjoy!

If this doesn't work, then there could be something wrong with your video card or drivers.
