I have recently built a Wither Boss containment room made from obsidian. Have spawned in the Wither a few times and killed him with iron golems. So far not a single obsidian block has been broken by the Wither. Is this a change in the game or a glitch?

There seem to be lights around the edge.
For a successful mob farm:
Valid spawning spaces (solid blocks).
Dark, 9 or less.
You must be between 16 and 32 blocks away.
No other spaces for mobs to spawn.
I have a gold farm that works a little differently to yours, here is a rough plan:
This is on the roof of the nether, so there are no other spawns up there. This increases efficiency.
Villagers, in Vanilla Minecraft, do not normally despawn, whether or not you have a nametag for them (per a number of entries on the Minecraft forums/wiki).
There are a number of ways that a villager may disappear (baby zombie attack through a 1 block hole, glitching themselves to death, or other bugs in the game, for example, getting too close to a door and being attacked through a wall).
Heck, I watched one jump on top of a 1 block high cactus and die because he was too stupid to jump down, but they aren't supposed to despawn once present (even if converted from a Zombie Villager).

There are a few possible causes:
mobGriefingis set tofalse, mobs won't be able to pick up or destroy items (source). Try running the command/gamerule mobGriefing trueand see if that does it.
