I'm playing with the new ARM stuff, and it's nice. But I tried to load up my research center, and it says it's closed. Some Googling quickly showed me that this happens in Sandbox mode. But my save is definitely a Career mode save. What gives? I need my R&D.
Edit: I managed to overwrite my old persistent save (why does KSP overwrite…) but I have a quicksave! It's just bugged beyond use. I have an in-flight mission but none of the parts or game mechanics (e.g. gravity) are working correctly.
Since version 0.23, the Mystery Goo Containment Unit and the SC-9001 Science Jr. can not be reused after you transmit their science data, unless you have a Mobile Processing Lab on the vessel (or dock with one which has). The MPL can "clean out" these experiments so they can be used again (It can also "process" any science data so you receive more science through transmitting them). You find these option when you right-click the MPL. Note that both of them require a lot of electricity, so your space laboratory should be equipped generously with batteries and solar panels.
Update: In current versions (since 1.0?) astronauts of the Scientist class can also reset these experiments while on EVA. To do so move the Astronaut very close to the part, right-click on it and pick the appropriate option.
You're best bet is to err on the side of safety and use too many. The potential financial loss for chutes ($700 each for radial) is much less than the potential financial loss of your entire ship.
I'd love to be able to give you some simple formula like "Use 1 chute for ever x tons". But there is no simple formula. The complex formula can be calculated using the tool you've linked to.
That said, these are some excellent tips:

. Modular girders and i-beams have 6x higher impact tolerance (80m/s) than the strongest lander legs (12m/s). You can land a 1000 ton ship on Kerbin with a single chute if it can survive a 80m/s landing.Good luck.

Turns out the game can fix itself if you give it some time- through time warp. Eventually, the game "notices" that it's started and suddenly gravity and all the parts work again, so I simply loaded the quicksave and tried time warp. After a few seconds at 10k it started functioning again, so I did indeed retrieve my save.
