in Rock Band 3, when using the Ion Drum Rocker do the cymbals register as separate hits? I heard in pro mode Rock Band 3 can do this. But is the Ion Drum Rocker compatible? Also is pro mode insanely difficult, or can you tame it down a bit for the more novice drummer? 🙂

Yes, but only in Rock Band 3. This is called "all instruments mode" (AIM) and can be enabled in the per-user overshell settings. That's the menu at the bottom of the screen for each player.

In AIM, there is no vocalist player with a controller, it's basically karaoke mode. Full easy harmony vocals are always on and scrolling across the top of the screen. Any connected microphone, up to 3, can sing any part of the song -- or not -- at any time. It is completely optional but always on for walk-ups.
There is no vocalist scoring in this mode though, so all you can do is get streaks and see how you do on each vocal segment.
That also means you can either sing lead (blue line), harmony #1 (orange line), or harmony #2 (red line) from any microphone.
I think it's unlikely that anything other than Guitar Hero drums will work. I have an Ion kit with three cymbals; it works fine with Rock Band 2 and 3, but shows up as a "normal" 4-color kit in GH: Monsters of Rock.
It's disappointing, because while I greatly prefer the Rock Band series now, I enjoy variety, but I'm not going to buy another kit just to get a better GH experience. (I tried that with a GH guitar to use the slide/tap stuff, and that wasn't really worth it IMHO.)

In Rock Band 3 Pro Drum mode, the cymbals show up differently on the tracks. They will show as circles instead of rectangles on the yellow, blue and green tracks. You must not only hit the correct color, but hit the drum or the cymbal as shown. Hitting the yellow drum pad when the yellow cymbal is shown counts as a miss.
You can adjust the difficulty just like in regular drums. There are Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert versions of each song, as in regular drums.
The ION Drum rocker is compatible, but only comes with two cymbals. There can be a total of three used in the tracks (for yellow, blue and green). If you do not have all three cymbals, there is a setting in the game that allows you to enable only the cymbals you have. For example, if you have only two, you can set it to where only the yellow and green cymbals symbols will appear. The blue pad will then always show as a drum.
