Steam – How to prevent the “Updating Steam” dialog from showing up
steam
Every time I start Steam, it takes a dozen seconds checking for updates.
Is there a way to force it to only check for updates on a weekly basis?

Yes, there is a way!
In order to hide the update dialog, simply run Steam with the -silent command line option.
As usual, any other dialogs (such as going into offline mode due to a lack of internet connection or a missing Steam Service warning) will appear. Those cannot be suppressed.
If you do not want Steam to verify its files (check integrety), run steam with the -noverifyfiles command line option.
There is an option within Steam that toggles whether or not Steam starts with your computer. To change it, open up the main Steam window and select 'Preferences' from the 'Steam' menu, followed by selecting the 'Interface' tab, which brings up the following screen;
Simply uncheck 'Run Steam when my computer starts' to prevent Steam from starting with your computer. (Obviously if you wanted to Steam to start with your PC, you'd check this box instead of unchecking it!)
macOS
If, on macOS, this doesn't work for you, check for Steam in "System Preferences" > "Users & Groups" > [Your user] > "Login Items", and remove it via the '-' sign.
Rename the file ClientRegistry.blob to ClientRegistry.bak. By default you should find this file under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam. This will force steam to generate a new .blob file and might fix your problem.
