I bought a game from the store, downloaded the game to my computer, and the game ran through steam. Then my computer crashed and eventually I got another computer. I logged into my steam account and it showed the game, but the game was in grey and i wasn't able to play.

Assuming his backups were working correctly (backup after every session), it should be safe to overwrite his save with yours, then let him overwrite yours when he wants to play.
The easier and safer option would be to use separate Windows accounts, but older games tend to store the saves in their install folder instead of your Users folder, putting you back at square one.
You can use a feature called "Family View" to restrict what your kids can do with your Steam account, including preventing them from accessing the store. This works by setting a 4-digit PIN that is used to log in as an adult "within" your account.
You can enable this and configure what parts of your Steam account are off-limits by going to Settings → Family and clicking on Manage Family View.
You'll want to leave the Steam store checkbox unchecked.

Basically Steam doesn't know the game is installed any more. Just select Install from the game's page in your library and click Next Next Next... If you still have the files left over from the previous installation before your computer crashed then it will actually scan those files and validate them instead of downloading them again.. Otherwise it will just download a fresh installation so you can once again play.
