Terraria – Does destroying additional demon altars generate more cobalt / thethril / adamantite

After defeating the Wall of Flesh I headed off to the nearest corruption and destroyed a bunch of demon altars. Upon destroying the fourth one the message "Your world has been blessed with cobalt" appeared again and the cycle repeated. Is my world actually getting more ore with each altar I destroy?

Yes, this is indeed the case. The more Altars you smash, the more hardmode ore your world will have. Note that every ore cycle yields less and less ore — fewer veins are generated each time, plus they have a chance to generate inside already-existing deposits.

Smashing a Demon Altar actually does 3 different things, provided you've unlocked hardmode:

Adds a bit of the ore named in the broadcast message to your world.
Summons a few Wraiths to your location.
Has a chance to either corrupt or hallow a random part of your world by planting a single block of Pearlstone or Ebonstone/Crimstone.

The tool-tip for Crimson Altars is Demon Altar. This is a bug in the game. Both Demon Altars and Crimson Altars can spawn the alternative ores. The one you get is random and not linked to the crimson/corruption of the world. Your world gets one ore from each tier by random.

The first three Demon Altars destroyed will trigger the creation of three new Ores, in the following order:

The first destroyed Demon Altar or Crimson Altar will trigger the creation of Cobalt Ore or Palladium Ore. The second destroyed Demon Altar or Crimson Altar will trigger the creation of Mythril Ore or Orichalcum Ore. The third destroyed Demon Altar or Crimson Altar will trigger the creation of Adamantite Ore or Titanium Ore.

Did you destroy at least 3? It also says that Hallow and Crimson/Corruption should spawn upon its death, not the altars. If that's not the case, i would assume it is a bug yes.
