As today's daily happened to be in Straits of Devastation I was busy doing some exploring to get my map completion when I came across a small circular tunnel hidden behind some vines. There was no enemies in the loop, but there was what looked like an Asura gate.
Does anyone have any idea what this gate is for? Is it for a specific event, or just a left-over in the map?
Unfortunately, as of release, there's currently no label on the World Map or anything else that marks the Asura Gates.
However, in Lion's Arch, the NPCs standing near each gate are indicative of where the gates go to. In the image here, you can see 2 Norn at the left gate to Hoelbrak and at the right gate, 2 Charr at the gate leading to the Black Citadel. So at least there, you can just glance at the NPCs standing at the gates rather than having to run all the way up to them.
The best way I found was to have 2-3 people constantly running from the barrels to the door, dropping them and the other 2 killing the adds. The adds will prioritise picking up barrels on the ground, then attack players with barrels. So if you have enough on the ground they don't damage anyone and the players not running the barrels can just kill them.
Once we figured it out it was quite easy.

According to the wiki page for Bramble Pass:
However, the positioning of this door doesn't quite match up to GW1's Bloodstone Caves. This doesn't preclude the possibility, since some things have moved a bit between GW1's map and GW2's, but it doesn't seem to be a certainty.
Players have looked inside via glitches and there's just an empty cave. So it looks like a possible hook for future content, but doesn't seem to have any purpose right now (aside from adding a little extra mystery to Tyria).
