I recall seeing an ad of bunch of teenagers playing Smash as their Amiibo characters, but I can't seem to find a way to actually do it.
I know I can play in a team with Amiibo and have it be controller by the CPU, but is it possible to control it myself?

Sadly, there is no option in the controls menu to assign movement to the d-pad.
The only thing you can do with the slide pad, is switch off/on if up should jump
The d-pad is for taunting.
I used Captain Falcon and here's why.
He's deceivingly heavier than he looks, and he's got an instant KO in this mode.
Just use -> B to KO the baddies and ignore your rival. He'll be unable to keep up with your score. You also want to stand on one of the two middle platforms to make sure that you'll get a KO from each -> B. Here's a video that basically did the exact same thing that I did if you're having more trouble.

It is impossible to control the Amiibo character.
I checked the electronic manual and it specifically mentions that Amiibo can be used as a Figurine Player and cannot be controlled.
