In the options menu for Cave Story+ on Nintendo Switch, there is an option labeled Flipped Input. I didn't see an explanation in the game's manual and, as far as I'm aware, this option is not available in any other version of Cave Story.
What does the Flipped Input option do?

The thing about weapons in cavestory, is that getting hit will cost you XP. Your weapons gain XP so quickly, becuase if you get hit at all, you need more XP to recharge.
This is especially true with the Blade, where even losing 1 single hitpoint is enough to knock you down from level 3 to level 2.
There's also a weapon later on in the game that is most powerful when it's level 1, and actually decreases with "level ups".
You gain XP so quickly because XP tends to fluctuate quite a bit anyways.
This doesn't change based on the difficulty level, but if you're on Hard, that means you're invariably losing less XP from getting hit, because getting hit usually means you're dead.
Cave Story 3D (for the 3DS) is a 3D remake of the 2004 original where all the characters and levels are in 3D perspective. There are also a few "easter eggs" for fans of the older games.
There have been numerous new versions and unofficial ports of Cave Story since the original was released in 2004, so assuming you don't want to know the specifics of the TI-83 plus calculator port, I'll just mention the differences of the five official versions.
