What triggers a “Crystarium Expanded” bonus

Every once in a while, while levelling up the crystarium for a character or monster, I get a "Crystarium Expanded" message, and am able to choose some special bonus. Do these happen at regular intervals that I can track somehow? How many bonuses is it possible to get for your your characters?

The Crystarium is broken up into several levels, or stages: each stage has an number of nodes. If you scroll around the Crystarium grid, you should see all the nodes for the stage.

When you complete a stage by activating all the nodes, the Crystarium expands to the next stage and you get a bonus.

For Serah and Noel, there are 22 Crystarium stages, allowing you to unlock 21 expansion bonuses. As I recall, that's all the expansion bonuses available, so it's just a matter of prioritizing which ones you want first.

For monsters, it depends entirely on the monster how many stages they have: early peakers (like the Pulse Knight) might only have one Crystarium stage, whereas late bloomers will have several.

Omega is a COM with Late Bloomed (i.e. max level 99), Sparkprone, and Heartless.

Passives Abilities: Feral Surge, Feral Fatigue and Leadenstrike.

Starting Attributes:

Attack 595
Magic  479

Is it possible to screw up the Crystarium

It is possible to max out every role to level 99. Once you have done so you can't level up the Crystarium any further. And just FYI the last 100 or so levels of the Crystarium are exponentially more expensive. Something in the neighborhood of 2k per orb.

Your max stats are not fixed, so in a sense, you can screw up the Crystarium. If you'll notice, when you are on a large orb that isn't a skill you'll get an additional bonus depending on what role you level at that point. So let's say you're leveling Noel and you take a COM level at a large orb. You'll get a bonus to that particular role. So although every role can hit 99 if you want Noel to be a strong COM you would want to always level COM on a large orb. In effect the number of large orbs is fixed.
