After the update, imperial resources cost credits to create but the reward is far less than the amount it will cost to assemble all the resources. For example, one assignment would require over 1,700,000 credits but the reward is only 30,000. So what is the point in assembling resources if you're just losing all your money?

These items are used to complete Imperial Assignments.
You can tap on the floor below your Arrivals floor (It is not named in the game, but some tips early-on explain its use) to see - and complete - the current assignment. These assignments require an increasing amount and variety of Imperial Items.
The values for floors don't start according to a formula until you get to floor 12, which costs 12,150. Once you reach that floor, the formula is:
150 * (Floor # - 3) * (Floor # - 3)
So, for floor 12 (which is actually the 10th floor you build) , you'd come up with: 150 * 9 * 9 = 12,150
For floor 83, you'd come up with 150 * 80 * 80 = 960,000
I've verified this formula works for all floors from 12 to 83. Floors 3 through 11 appear to be random in how costs are calculated.
Also, random factoid, the amount of the increase increases by 300 for each level (after 12). So going from 12 (12,150) to 13 (15,000) is a 2,850 increase. Going from 13 (15,000) to 14 (18,150) is a 3,150 increase, which is the 2,850 (from 12->13) + 300.
Going from 14 (18,150) to 15 (21,600) increases by 3,150 + 300 for a total of 3,450.
I'm sure that's just a function of math in the original formula, but I thought it was a neat pattern.

Completing Imperial Resources to complete the Imperial tasks does earn you Bux, Coins, and the occasional VIP.
I make them constantly on all floors so that, hopefully, when I complete one task, the next one can be completed immediately with stock on hand.
When initially released, the rewards for tasks was less than the cost to build the items total but it has since been rebalanced making it worthwhile to complete the tasks... with the cost update recently, it's out of whack again but, hopefully, they will rebalance to make the reward better again.
