I'd like to purchase a Shadow weapon from a merchant and while I have the couple of rare components needed, I am short a lot of metal shards. While I could go out and hunt random beasts for their metal shards, I was wondering if there's a particularly good place to do so.

This guide lists a specific lake as a good place to find fish. The lake appears to be on the Carja side of the map, as southern as you can go directly west of the Daytower.
You want to reach the lake featured in the screenshot above. It’s not a very dangerous area at lower levels but there are some Snapmaw nearby so if you’re under level 10, be cautious. In the lake you will find several spawns of fish, most of which respawn rather quickly if you just swim to the other side.

This is the Blue variant of the weapon and can be obtained after reaching Daytower for the price of 300 Metal Shards, 5 Desert Glass and 2 Slagshine Glass. It has 50 handling and 2 mod slots.
I can't tell you for sure which exact merchants will have it available, but the Meridian merchant sells all weapons available, so if you can't find it elsewhere, go there. Being the Carja War Bow, however, (and based on the guide), I believe you can find it at any merchant in Carja, as the Daytower is the gate into Carja territory.
