Which hold items are more effective during the battle phase? I've seen "duplicate" items throughout the game, such as the Zap Plate and the Magnet which both increase electric type moves. But which one gives you a greater increase to damage? I know there are others, such as the Flame Plate and Charcoal to increase fire moves, so how many different variances are there of these items and what does each do?

In Lumiose City there is a "Stone Emporium" that sells...stones.
If you go in, there's usually only a clerk that sells regular stones (Fire, Leaf, Sun, etc.). However, to the left of the clerk there is a man who does sell the Mega Evolution stones.
Note, his prices are tremendously expensive, if you haven't defeated the Elite Four yet. Defeating the Elite Four and the Champion should move the game into postgame, which drastically cuts down the prices for the stones.
Here are the stones he sells:
Main Game (before Elite Four)
- Charizardite X/Y - 1,000,000
- Venusaurite - 1,000,000
- Blastoisenite - 1,000,000
Post Game (after Elite Four)
- Charizardite X/Y - 150,000
- Venusaurite - 150,000
- Blastoisenite - 150,000

The new limit is 9,999,999 pokedollars, which i found out by having too much free time and over using the prize money o-power. The mega stone prices go down because of how famous you are in lumiose i believe, which is increased by your first league victory...i have seen prices for them go down to 150,000...either this is lumiose fame or they used a lvl 3 o-power, im not certain.

Zap plate and Magnet are the same boost. Any two items that read with the same effect generally have identical effects; the reason they differ are because they have different effects on different Pokemon, usually one is an evolution item for a specific pokemon. In the case of the elemental Plates, they are actually items for Arceus to hold, they change his form and typing due to his Ability, Multitype. The Plates are probably included because there's so many it wouldn't be practical to give them all out when they eventually distribute Arceus in a gen 6 event.
