I am having issues turning on my Xbox One using voice commands via the Kinect. I have my Kinect set up above my TV, on a shelf.
Is there anything I can do to make the Kinect more responsive?

Still, I had fun with the Kinect-ready Xbox features that were under my control. Launch the Zune app, for example, and say "Xbox, Suggest a movie" to start watching previews of new rentals; if you like what you see, you say "Xbox, Watch this" to start watching, or "Xbox, Next" for another preview. Or you can jump into your library of TV episode purchases, waving your hand to select the series and episode you want to watch.
Even better is scanning within a video for a certain scene. You wave your hand, move the floating hand icon over the little white mitt on the progress bar, and then swipe back and forth to scan the video forward and backward. I have to say, I was surprised by the degree of control I had; I was afraid the video would fly all over the place, but Kinect did a great job of tracking even my most subtle movements, allowing me to move forward or back in steps as small as 15 seconds.
... which is very small. Not many have been found that are not on that list, but "ESPN" is one for example, that can bring you to the ESPN page while on the dashboard. Microsoft has stated it is up the the individual game / app maker for functionality, and that they should provide a list that can be used with their services.
At one point it was demo'd that you could turn on / turn off the machine using voice commands. This functionality however did not make it to release (for obvious reasons).

Update 2016:
Beyond Rapitor's tips, Xbox has now rolled out Cortana (summer '16), I think Cortana installs automatically with automatic updates enabled. Cortana disables the original kinect voice commands. To verify setting go to
Settings>All Settings>System>Cortana Settings, on the side ribbon the feature switch will indicateOnorOff. When Contana is "on", users will need to use a new set of voice commands, find out more here.
