My livingroom has a white wall with a visible brown stain on it.
I would like to cover it with some white paint but the wall was painted a couple of years ago so it is not bright white but it has become darkish.
How should I cover the stain with white paint avoiding the "bright white patch" effect on a white wall?
I honestly do not think painting a floor would be a good idea. A solid color paint or stain will likely chip and wear unevenly. As in wherever your high traffic areas are will look awful in no time at all.
If you are to paint it you will need to sand the gloss of the previous coating. This glass will prevent any other paints or stains from correctly adhering to the surface. The same exact rule applies to painting a glossy wall or any other surface.
In my personal opinion, it is always worth it to remove wall paper. Even if this one doesn't have a strange texture to it, it's always easier to patch holes or similar things later if you don't have an extra layer of vinyl to deal with.
Wall paper and glue can really vary-- some of it is a royal pain to remove, while others just peel right off the wall. I've had both in the same house. A spray bottle of warm water really helps. You might need to poke holes in the paper to let the water through; this tool makes it really easy to do so by just rolling it around on the wall.
In my opinion, your painting will definitely go easier with less hassles if you aren't trying to paint over vinyl. Of course, "the proof is in the pudding": if painting over the vinyl works for you, there is no overwhelming need to remove the wallpaper. It really is a personal preference; whatever works for you will be good enough.

First, you should fix the source of the stain. If this is water damage, it will reoccur until you stop the water. Then clean the surface, apply a primer, and then some matching paint. To get matching paint, remove a small chip of paint you'd like to match and have the store give you a custom mix based on your chip. When applying paint, you should feather it into the rest of the wall so that any transitions become difficult to see. Note that most people would repaint the entire wall since it isn't much more work and the result looks even better.
