You want to apply a penetrating grout sealer. This one says that it last up to 5 years depending on conditions.
The key for the sealer to last as long as possible on a backsplash is to avoid cleaning it with "harsh cleaners" like bleach and antibacterial sprays. You want to use something that is not going to remove the grout sealer when cleaning the backsplash. They sell specific cleaners that are easy on the grout at the tile shops, but I have read that just using diluted white vinegar works.
A Scotch Brite pad has always worked for me. If you are dealing with a large area, use a random orbital sander with a Scotch Brite attachment and the universal lubricant, water.

Try one of the many Grout Restorers or Rejuvenators. They would bring the problem area(s) back to matching the rest of the grout. There are also Grout Coloring Kits that basically paint or stain the grout. You can luck out if a color perfectly matches your grout, but usually you'll have to do the whole floor's grout lines for everything to match. Sealing your grout is the only preventative measure you can take to avoid future situations. This paints on a clear coat & thereby removes grout's porosity. Though, it does need to be re-done every 3 to 10-years...depending on traffic.
