I play Age of Kings (AOE 2) on my home LAN. It runs ridiculously slow/choppy. Both of the machines are well beyond the minimum requirements for the game to run, and my router is a fairly new Linksys with G wireless. (I get the lag with or without 1 or more of the machines using the wireless.)
Are there router or game settings I can use to fix this? Or is this a game that just doesn't work well with modern PC's?
After the game, on the Achievements page, tab called "Score", hover your mouse on a score value in one of the columns, and you will see a text at the bottom that describes the score system.
That is,
Military score is 20% of the resource value (cost) of all enemy units and buildings each player destroyed or converted.
Economy score is 10% of all resources each player currently has or has paid in tribute, plus 20% of the resource value of surviving units and standing buildings (except Castles or Wonders).
Technology score is 20% of the resource value of every technology each player has researched, plus 10 points for every 1% of the map explored.
Society score is 20% of the cost of the Castles and Wonders each player has constructed.
Total Score is the overall total of each player's Military, Economy, Technology, and Society scores.
For example, if you have 189 points in Dark Age and do nothing else but buy a Villager for 50 food, you will temporarily lose 5 points (10% of 50), so you'll have 184 points. Once the villager is born/"built", you'll get 20% of 50, that is 10 points, for the villager, and you'll have 194 points. If you now chop 15 wood and add it to your resources then you'll get 1 extra points (that's "10%" of 15) and end up with 195 points.
Side note: in Dark Age where the points are low and actions are few, score is a very valuable information about your opponent's economy, start of age-advancing and scouting. It's also possible to recognize some known strategies based on score patterns.
You can not play them together:
Multiplayer matches between Mac OS and Windows clients do not work as the game version is different on each operating system. This leads to a version mismatch error when attempting to join a match. The current Mac version 1.0.5 is only in sync with the 1.12 Windows version, when it needs to be in sync the Windows version 1.13.
Although that is from Age of Empires 3 I think that it's safe to assume the most recent release would be the more likely to accomodate cross platform matchups. Not to mention EVERY thread online says that you can't do it.
You could run Windows off your MAC and then play them against each other, but this would involve quite a bit of effort.

Around Spring of 2006 I was trying to play via IP with a friend and we had all kinds of issues, then we tried out hamachi and it seemed to help out a lot. Not sure what all it did as I'm not good hardware/technical stuff, but it made that pretty easy. We were in the same apartment complex, but different buildings, and we each had our own ISP account and modems/routers.
