Should I be checking every time I'm about to give a new plan to the blacksmith (or the jeweller), that he doesn't know it yet ? Currently I'm not, and hoping that, in this particular case, the game will give me an error like "The blacksmith already knows this plan" and will spare the item.

I know this is an old question, but there is in fact the following workaround!
Equip the item, leave the game and logout (this step is required for your profile to be updated). Then log in at http://battle.net, click on Diablo III, navigate to your profile and select the character who has the item equipped. If the item is dyed, then a small icon should be visible at the bottom-left of its equipment slot; hover over it to find out the colour.

See the breadcrumb-line at the top too.
Go to the Blacksmith and right click the Plan.

This is what happens indeed. You already see it when you hover over the plans. It says: Already known.
