While playing the game, every once in a while I get this key prompt for leaning. It looks like I should press the right mouse button, but that only goes into aim-down-sights -mode. What does it mean and what does it do?

High Value Target is a default commander resource featured in Battlefield 4. It reveals the location of an enemy to the entire team for 45 seconds, becoming available once that enemy has reached a six or more kill streak. Bonuses are awarded to players who eliminate HVTs, and to HVTs themselves for continuing their kill streaks.

Those are your "Field Upgrades" you can unlock and earn many different upgrades which you can switch out like a kit. Each one has 4 levels of perks that they give. Each bar is a new perk. As you fill up your bar, you unlock more perks. You'll see in that screenshot they have unlocked 1 of 4 of their perks currently.
- You get points towards these perks by doing SQUAD actions. Squad orders, squad heal, squad revive ect...
- Your perks that you get are based on kit you chose with that class.
- Your perks will be set back one level every time you entire squad gets wiped.
- Unlike squad perks from BF3, these only apply to your personal player.
Your best bet is to choose perks that align with your play style and stick to your squad. By getting squad points you unlock them all pretty fast in a game. Also you should always have (preferably your squad leader) in the back where they likely will not be killed. Your squad leader should also make sure they are issuing orders on points to get tons of bonus points.

BF4 uses a "smart lean" system. The beta is a bit buggy with it, but the premise is that when that pops up, you are by a corner and holding the ADS button will cause you to lean around that corner, exposing less of yourself to the enemy. The best way to see it is to stand at the corner of a wall and play with it. It takes some getting used to but once you do, it will feel smooth.
